Gel and acrylic manicure are two different types of nail enhancement treatments.  Acrylic nails are normally used to lengthen the nail, and to provide a strengthen top overlay over the natural nailbed. 

Acrylic gel is available in clear, natural tones while gel polishes comes in many different shades and tones.  Acrylic manicure is created with powder, cured in dipping solvents. Gel manicure solidify when cured under a UV or LED lamp.

How Long Does Gel Manicure Last?

Gel manicure usually lasts for up to 2 weeks with proper nail prep and nail maintenance.  However, if you would like to stretch it, gel manicure can essentially last up to 4 weeks. 

It is important to note how long a gel manicure can last varies.  With proper nail care like applying cuticle oil and hand lotion will help keep the manicure looking great and longer.

Does Gel Manicure Damage Your Nails?

Gel manicure when not done correctly or professionally can damage your nails.  Many have the impression that gel manicures can weaken your nail bed and cause your nails to be brittle.  In contrary, an improper removal process is what damages your nails.

Many girls are tempted to peel off the gel polish instead of heading down to the salon for a proper removal treatment.  So, remember to stop digging into those nails no matter how tempted you are. Treat your nails with the care it deserves.

How Do You Remove Gel Manicure Safely?

We can stress enough how important it is to give your gel manicure a proper removal process.  Cuticles and nail beds are made of living tissues and you do not want to damage these tissues by biting and ripping it. 

You can do a simple DIY removal with acetone, cotton balls, and tin foil to remove the gel manicure.  Once it softens, use a nail file to remove the excess. Otherwise, just head down to your nearest nail salon to have a proper removal.

Are UV Lights Harmful?

Yes, UV lights can be harmful when overly exposed.  The UV light in the lamp is of a small voltage and does not harm you.  And, many salons have also converted to LED curing. LED curing does not have any of those harmful UV rays.

Do DIY Gel-Kits Works?

There are many different types of DIY gel-kits available in the market.  Honestly, most of them are the same. If you would like to try doing a manicure at home yourself, try watching some YouTube tutorials.  Pay special attention to how a proper nail prep is done. Next, you would also want to be careful when cutting your own cuticles. Ensure that your equipment is clean and sterilized.  We do want to introduce bacteria and fungus into our nails.

A gel-kit will last longer compared to a normal polish.  However, you will need to manage your expectations. A DIY gel-kit usually lasts up to 10 days and is not salon grade.  Be careful during application to prevent the gel polish from chipping and any damages to your nail bed.
